After an absence of several years, 1978 was a bumper crop of Lassie films. One was a television movie written by Earl Hamner Jr (The Waltons) called Lassie: The New Beginning. Lassie is the pet of the Stratton children, Samantha (Sally Boyden) and Chip (Shane Sinutko), whose guardian grandmother is taking them to their uncle when she dies enroute. The children and Lassie then escape protective custody and try to get to their Uncle Stewart's home themselves, a treacherous mountain crossing.
